Ski Seefeld, Austria

Tyrolean hospitality is renowned and nowhere is this more evident than in Seefeld. Well, they've got used to welcoming international guests here, twice hosting the cross-country ski events for the Winter Olympics and also beginning a key venue on the Nordic sports calendar. The town is situated on an elevated plateau only half an hour's drive from the international airport in Innsbruck and very near the German border, saving the visitor from any cumbersome transfer worries. Celebrated for its beauty and wildlife, much of the surrounding countryside is within the Wildmoos nature reserve, an unspoiled car-free area that is largely untouched by the intrusion of man. Famed for its 200km of cross-country trails the Geigenbühel nursery slopes also offer the perfect introduction to skiing for the novice.

The Snow

Seefeld is first and foremost a cross-country ski resort. It has a second to none reputation among devotees of this most challenging of sports. The 200km of trails criss-cross the most spectacular virgin alpine terrain and if you've only experienced downhill, exploring the Wildmoos is the perfect opportunity to widen your horizons. That said there's plenty to occupy the more orthodox among us. The Gschwandtkopf piste has a number of red slopes and one excellent steep vertical black run. Snowboarders are well catered for with a fun park and half pipe on the neighbouring Roßhütte Mountain. These areas are serviced by 24 lifts and Gschwandtkopf is reachable by funicular and cable car. Snow cover is generally good.

Après Ski

It's the great range of off piste activities which truly solidifies Seefeld's reputation as a major ski and winter sport resort. The superb skating, tobogganing, curling, bowling, badminton, the list could continue, facilities are part of the town's legacy as a major sporting venue. If less energy-consuming après-ski is your hat then you won't be disappointed either. The town's large illuminated pedestrian centre is the perfect backdrop for an evening's leisurely stroll. The sauna and spa complex will help ease those pains away and then it's time to party. Graham's Pub has an excellent 'happy hour', to get proceedings off to an inexpensive start. For a unique atmosphere we strongly advise a visit to The Siglu, surely the worlds only glass igloo bar!
