Kaprun

*high altitude resort*

Holidaying in Kaprun is not a new phenomenon with the area attracting the attention of DH Lawrence and even the ancient Celts in the mists of the pre-internet age. This ancient heritage is an added bonus to an area already blessed with an abundance of Tyrolean charm and some of the most varied skiing terrain one could hope to find. Such attractions assure the lucky locals of an all-year tourist bonanza.

The Snow

A part of the Europa Sportregion, which also includes the neighbouring and chic resort of Zell am See, Kaprun boasts the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, on which year-round skiing is possible from as high as 3029m. The adjoining Maiskogel offers additional slopes including nursery slopes on the lower reaches. This area also offers excellent facilities for snowboarding with its wide-open slopes.

Après Ski

With the town having been inhabited from at least 1500BC there is a lot of history to dwell upon once you are off the piste. There is the nearby contemporary Kaprun power station, a feat of modern engineering, rightly held up as a symbol of post war Austria's rebirth. If it is less cerebral activity you're after (and of course the sights will wait another day), the village and slopes are well catered for with eateries and bars.
